Addiction is a condition in which the spouse of an alcoholic is fully involved in and takes responsibility for their husband’s illness. Larisa Mazurova, an employee of the Tomsk NIMC Research Institute of Mental Health, told socialbites.ca that, as a rule, the risk of alcoholism in women with interdependence is very high.
“Recently, we are dealing with quite a number of cases of female alcoholism in interdependent relationships, and several factors are at work here. First, the state of stress and unbearable feelings of interdependence cause a woman to look for a way out of these experiences. And right before her eyes, in a state of intoxication. There is an alcoholic who feels pretty good. Secondly, women try to support their husbands when they are drunk: let him drink at home instead of drinking elsewhere, and drink with him so that he gets less. And all this ultimately leads to the formation of alcoholism in a woman, ”Mazurova explained.
In addition, an additional problem is that alcoholism manifests itself much more severely in women and is more difficult to treat. Women are no longer aware of their problems.
“Due to the social inadmissibility of female alcoholism, women turn to specialists in the second, third stage of addiction, when it is already very difficult to help them,” said the psychologist.
