The Guatemalan Attorney General, who took over the investigation, said the victims included 13 Hondurans, 12 Venezuelans, 12 Salvadorans, a Colombian and an Ecuadorian, but did not specify which of them were injured and who died.
According to the publication, the fire was set by immigrants themselves who tried to cross into the United States illegally. They were detained by law enforcement and intended to be deported to their home country. As a sign of their protest, however, the refugees set the mattresses on fire in the cells of the immigration center where they were detained. The fire, which grew in a short time, caused a large fire in the entire building.
