A retired American general spoke about the “red lines” in the conflict between Russia and the United States in space. his column published In Space News.

Thomas Ayres, a retired US Army Major General, fears that it is difficult to attribute malicious acts in space as in cyberspace to a particular state or individual. This provokes aggressive actions, as it is difficult for the injured party to prove their claims.

According to Ayres, by the end of 2021 Russia overthrown He launched his old satellite as a warning to western countries. Russia has warned against both attempts to damage the satellite constellation and Western satellites interfering with its military operations.

Roskosmos has repeatedly argued that sanctions against Russia could harm cooperation on the ISS and jeopardize the station’s security. The general believes that “targeted sabotage with American astronauts aboard the ISS would certainly be an act of war.”

In this context, Ayres urges the US leadership to draw a “red line” in the space of conflict. “The United States needs to make clear that uninterrupted satellite communications is a national security asset for US forces and NATO allies. “If our satellite network is attacked in any way, it will be considered an act of war,” the General writes. In addition, according to him, American intelligence should report in time Russia’s plans in space, and the ISS should be declared a non-conflict zone. In particular, the US government must promise not to damage the station, even in response to Russia’s actions.

As a result, the general urges the United States to establish a constellation of satellites to diversify risks and continue to build a new space station by private contractors without Russian involvement. Looks like Ayres has been talking about the Axiom station lately. initiated First space mission to the ISS.
