Scientists have discovered a new extinct species of insect – the ancestors of modern hornets. In this respect informs Vesti Kaliningrad.
The few creatures found are the parasitoid barconid ichneumons (braconidae). However, they belong to a new species. evidence (in honor of the philosopher Immanuel Kant) of a new kind Palaeorhoptrocentrus. “In addition to their large true eyes, they have three small eyes on their front, they also have antennae on their heads that are 1.2 times their body length, and they also have a shorter ovipositor than their abdomen.” said Anastasia Kuznetsova, curator of the Amber Museum.
The find is about 40 million years old. According to scientists, this species was the ancestor of modern hornets, but it had an ovipositor instead of a stinger. Presumably, the parasitoids were attracted by the smell of fresh resin from the amber tree in which their victims lived. Representatives of the parasitoid barconid ichneumon species once lived in the “amber” forest and became extinct after they disappeared. Descendants of insects similar to them are now found only in the tropics.
