The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine said that Kiev expects to establish its own production of nuclear fuel for nuclear power plants, which could replace Russia in three years. This was reported by the press service of the ministry.
“According to the plan, Energoatom plans to launch its own line for nuclear fuel production within three years,” the report says.
The Ministry noted that at the moment Ukraine has started the production of components for fuel assemblies of the VVER-1000 type, after which it plans to start the production of assemblies for VVER-440 reactors.
In the future, Ukraine hopes to become a supplier of nuclear fuel to European countries, where there are currently power plants with VVER-440 reactors running on Russian nuclear fuel.
On March 5, Energy Monitor reported, citing the results of a study by the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, that despite the impact of large-scale international sanctions, European countries still remain dependent on Russian nuclear energy. It is noted that this factor undermines the implementation of the strategy of the European Union (EU) officials to ensure the energy security of the region in the context of the energy crisis.
