A slight increase in body temperature during illness is usually worse than a fever because the person tries to continue living in the same rhythm by exacerbating the symptoms. Candidate of medical sciences Daria Zhukova, an allergy-immunologist at the branch of the Israeli clinic Hadassah in Skolkovo, told socialbites.ca about this.
According to the expert, with the increase in body temperature, immunity against infection is activated and the pathogens themselves weaken and die. Chills, sweating, muscle and joint pain, general weakness and fatigue, headache are common symptoms of the infectious process, which are the result of the action of bacterial and viral toxins. And they are in no way dependent on temperature – on the contrary, it depends on them.
“Signs and complaints of high temperature are rarely associated with the fever itself, they are caused by the course of the disease that causes the fever, a protective reaction of the body,” said the candidate of medical sciences.
The doctor noted that the reason why people think a temperature of 37-37.5 is worse than a high temperature is purely psychological.
“At low temperature, a person has the desire and will to continue to work, study, spend time actively, but a deterioration in well-being limits these desires. In other words, patients try to continue living in the same rhythm, but this increases the symptoms of the disease, making it difficult to perform ordinary tasks. Therefore, it seems that the disease is worse tolerated at home than in bed, even with a higher fever, ”said the allergist-immunologist Daria Zhukova.
