Visentini, 54 years old, accepted at the end of December for receiving cash payments A “donation of less than 50,000 euros” from the NGO Against Impunity led by his compatriot former European Parliament Member Pier Antonio Panzeri, who is considered one of the main suspects in the case.
However, Visentini this donation was not linked to any corruption or influence trading attempt for the benefit of Qatar, instead, it aimed to reimburse the ITUC general secretariat for certain costs incurred by its campaign.
The unionist was elected head of the organization in November, before he was suspended from his post on December 21.
In its deportation statement, the ITUC wanted to state that: His internal investigation produced no evidence that Qatari donations influenced the union body’s policies.. However, as a result of Visentini’s involvement in this donation, the union decided that the trade unionist’s General Council had “lost confidence”.
In a statement on its website, The ITUC announces that a new secretary general will be appointed “as soon as possible” at the extraordinary session of the central Congress.
