Northrop Grumman has signed a contract to supply the US Marine Corps with a Next Generation Portable Guidance System (NGHTS). It has been reported tech blog.
According to the publication, the system provides greater pointing accuracy and can operate in the absence of GPS using an advanced rangefinder laser pointer.
NGHTS consists of three sensors: a color daytime thermal imager, a thermal imager for imaging in total darkness. A high-precision GPS receiver and an astronomical compass can determine the azimuth (angular measurement in a spherical coordinate system) for the direction of the target relative to NGHTS with accuracy in fractions of a degree.
Weighing less than 10 pounds, this device can operate in extreme environments including extreme temperatures, vibration, salt fog and extreme altitudes.
The newspaper also states that parts for NGHTS can be printed in the field on a 3D printer.
