The habit of leaving the phone charging all night before going to bed can cause the device to overheat and the battery to deteriorate rapidly. Shamil Magomedov, head of the Intelligent Information Security Systems Department of the RTU MIREA Institute of Cyber Security and Digital Technologies, told socialbites.ca.
According to the expert, battery life is measured not by time displays, but by the number of charge-discharge cycles. One charge-discharge cycle is the consumption of full capacity – from 100% to 0%. In practice, only a portion of the charge, for example 70%, is consumed in a day, and then the device is charged all night and only the remaining 30% is used until the cycle is completed the next day.
“A standard battery is rated for 500-600 cycles, after which there is a noticeable degradation process. Deterioration refers to the phenomenon where a battery loses its ability to hold a charge by reducing its capacity. Thus, the device will stop charging when the maximum charge level is reached. However, if the charge drops below 100%, the charge continues, that is; this contributes to the degradation process of the battery.”
The extent of this damage is difficult to assess, as manufacturers implement power management in different ways and use different equipment.
“Modern smartphones are equipped with “smart” chargers that either stop supplying voltage when the charge reaches 100 percent or “extend” the charging time to save battery. However, if your gadget belongs to the old generation, the battery may overheat, which will shorten its life. Heating the device to 60 degrees can “eat” 40% of its total battery capacity in just three months, Magomedov said.
If you prefer to charge your smartphone at night, the specialist strongly recommends using only original devices and in no case leave the phone under the pillow to avoid overheating.
