Scientists at the University of Queensland have found that Lion’s mane extract promotes brain cell growth and can improve memory. The results of the research were published at: Journal of Neurochemistry.
Biologists discover new active compounds from fungus Hericium erinaceus, for example, hericene A. Using ultra-high-resolution microscopy, they showed that the mushroom extract and its active ingredients promote the growth of brain cells and the formation of connections between them. The tests were done on cells in the brain’s hippocampus, which play an important role in converting short-term memories into long-term memories.
After experiments on cells, the scientists moved on to experiments on mice. Animals fed raw extract erinaceus and Gericenom A, significantly improved memory.
The scientists believe their work will have applications in the treatment and prevention of neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease.
