In the US, they are preparing to sell Vibrant vibrocapsules to relieve chronic constipation. It is reported by CNN.
The vibrating capsule is designed for oral use at bedtime. After about 14 hours, it reaches the large intestine, where it begins to stimulate the nerves and cause them to contract. The capsule then leaves the human body during defecation.
The tablets are made of a medical grade material similar to what gastroenterologists use for ingested cameras to monitor the gastrointestinal tract.
The capsules are designed for the 10-20% of people living with chronic constipation, who have fewer than three bowel movements per week for unknown reasons, and who often experience pain during bowel movements. Tested on 349 people. 200 received the vibrocapsule and 149 received a placebo.
In the Vibrant group, 40% of patients noted an improvement in stool, compared with 12% of patients in the placebo group. The degree of relief in patients was not less than with conventional laxatives, but there were much less side effects.
The capsules are approved for the treatment of adults who do not benefit or cannot tolerate other constipation medications. The swallow is not intended for people with a history of stomach paralysis or intestinal obstruction, according to CNN.
