Scientists from Trinity College Dublin have found that in patients with cognitive impairment after COVID, the integrity of the barrier separating the circulatory system of the brain from the rest of the body is disrupted. Work published in the catalog Research Square.
More than 70 patients over the age of 18 with coronavirus infection were included in the study. Severe COVID-19 infection was mostly reported by men.
Standard diagnostic MRI showed no pathological changes in the brain in any of the patients. But scientists have detected leaky blood vessels in the brains of patients with conative disorders on dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI. There was a lot of damage, especially in the temples and frontal lobes. Also, brain volume in these areas and the cerebellum was smaller in people with cognitive impairment.
In mild cases of infection, patients had markedly elevated interleukin-8 (IL-8). There was a significant increase in IL-6, IL-8 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) levels in severe cases of COVID-19. The presence of cognitive impairment has also been associated with an increase in these indicators. This confirms the presence of severe inflammation that can lead to cerebrovascular damage and cognitive impairment.
Research Square publishes preliminary scientific reports that have not been peer-reviewed and therefore should not be considered conclusive.
