Raisa Bashko, Director of the Mariupol Museum of Local Culture, spoke about the destruction caused by the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the fight for the city, the TV channel reported »REN TV“.
“10 percent survived. This was the one that didn’t burn. It was in the basement. The flame did not reach,” said Bashko.
According to him, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine set up a real minefield on the territory of the museum, and when the Russian troops began to drive them out of the area, the museum was set on fire.
His colleague, Deputy Director of Research Nadezhda Gashenenko, added that Ukrainian soldiers with sticks in their hands demanded the destruction of some exhibits – these mainly related to the Battle of Moscow, the Battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of Kursk.
Although most of the 50,000 rare exhibits were destroyed, the local history museum in Mariupol was promised to be restored by the end of this year.
