An ancient Egyptian scarab figurine has been found in Israel. About informs Israel 21c edition.
Eighth graders from the Azores city near Tel Aviv took a tour guide course that taught them about the local archaeological heritage. Team leader Gilad Stern suddenly noticed something unusual on the ground.
“We were walking when I saw something that looked like a small toy,” he says. – Something inside me said to me, “Take it and turn it over.” I was surprised – it was a highly visible scarab, every amateur archaeologist’s dream. The figurine was most likely created around 1500-1000 BC. The relief image on it was used as a seal and served to show status and power. It could possibly be attached to a ring or necklace. It is not clear exactly how the object fell to the ground – it was intentionally buried or accidentally dropped.
The seal is made of tiles covered with a bluish-green glaze. It depicts in relief a scene believed to illustrate the ritual of giving legitimacy to a new ruler. A man is clearly seen sitting in front of a standing figure and raising his hand over the seated figure. A standing person has an elongated head – this is how the artist could depict the crown of the Egyptian pharaoh.
“This scene reflects the geopolitical reality that prevailed in Canaan during the Late Bronze Age, when local rulers lived and periodically rebelled under the political and cultural hegemony of Egypt,” the scholars explain.
