Scientists from the Danish Serum Institute (SSI) found that vaccination against COVID-19 protects against re-infection by 60-94%. The results are published in: PLOS Medicine.
The team analyzed infection and vaccination data from nationwide Danish registries, which included all people living in Denmark who tested positive for coronavirus between January 2020 and January 2022. The dataset included data from more than 200,000 people who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.
The analysis showed that people who were already sick had a reduced chance of being reinfected by 71% during Alpha variant activity, 94% during Delta variant activity, and 60% during Omicron variant activity, while protection was maintained. up to nine months.
The findings of the new study are consistent with the findings of a study in Qatar that found that two doses of mRNA vaccine for COVID-19 reduced the risk of re-infection by 55.1%.
The authors noted that their study was too short to determine whether the vaccine protected against serious consequences such as death and hospitalization. But their data proved the vaccine’s efficacy against re-infection with SARS-CoV-2, highlighting the need for vaccination even for those who can be protected by innate immunity.
