ONEXGPU 2 with AMD RX 7800M Shows Strong Mobile-Desktop Potential in Time Spy

The ONEXGPU 2 external graphics array, built around the AMD Radeon RX 7800M, was evaluated using the 3DMark Time Spy benchmark. In this assessment, the mobile Radeon RX 7800M demonstrated a notable edge, surpassing the desktop NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070. The test run yielded a score of 15,806 points, which represents about a 16% lead over the RTX 4070’s 13,391 points.

It is worth noting that the ONEXGPU 2 employs the OCuLink interface, which offers lower bandwidth relative to PCI Express. Consequently, the observed performance of the RX 7800M could be, on average, around 25% higher in real-world use than the recorded score. When the RX 7800M powers laptops, its performance might exceed that of the mobile RTX 4070, underscoring the potential of external solutions to close the gap with desktop-class GPUs.

The key distinction between mobile and desktop graphics cards lies in clock speeds and memory capacity. Desktop GPUs typically run at higher clocks and feature larger video memory pools, delivering superior raw performance.
