Cameo is described here as a key innovation within the Mortal Kombat series, introducing a secondary fighter that appears during battles to deliver extra impact. This guide explains how the cameo mechanic functions and whether players can switch it off.

A cameo hero is selected before a fight begins. This secondary fighter cannot be controlled directly. A single button handles all its actions: on PlayStation 5 it is R1, on Xbox it is RB, on Nintendo Switch it is R, and on a PC keyboard it is the semicolon key. Cameos can be used as a standalone strike or as part of a combo; each fighter has a unique set of moves, which will be explored in dedicated guides later on.
Energy is required to deploy a cameo. A circular indicator around the cameo’s portrait in the upper corner shows how much energy is available for use.
A cameo can only be summoned when the cameo portrait is brightly lit. Attempting to deploy a cameo with insufficient energy will interrupt the player’s combo and leave them vulnerable to a counterattack.
Each cameo fighter brings their own distinct repertoire. Sonya Blade sends energy waves, Goro strikes with four fists, and others follow their own patterns. The presence of cameo fighters adds variety to Mortal Kombat 1, with hundreds of possible character pairings. For instance, Scorpio’s move can push back enemies, while Sonya’s cameo can unleash an energy wave that deals substantial damage and can lead to quick, decisive blows.
Cameos have their own fatalities. Details about these finishers are covered in guides dedicated to move execution.
