Actor James McCaffrey passed away on December 17. His voice became familiar to many through the Max Payne trilogy, yet his career spans far more than that iconic role. This article surveys James McCaffrey’s major performances in films and video games.

Max Payne from the Max Payne trilogy

Between 1996 and 2001, McCaffrey appeared in television series such as Law & Order and Sex and the City, and he acted in the comedy The Truth About Cats & Dogs. His breakout popularity came with Max Payne, released in 2001. McCaffrey voiced the protagonist in cutscenes and in-game comics, delivering a tired, slightly hoarse voice that fit a man scarred by loss and driven by revenge.

Two years later Max Payne 2 again featured McCaffrey in the leading role. The third installment was developed by Rockstar Studios rather than Remedy, but the studio invited McCaffrey back. This time his contribution extended beyond voice acting: his likeness was used to model Max Payne. In the first two games, the character Payne was portrayed by others, Sam Lake and Timothy Gibbs respectively.

Also noted is the film Max Payne starring Mark Wahlberg, where McCaffrey appears in a small role as FBI agent Jack Taliente, a cameo that fans appreciated.

Alex Casey and Thomas Zane from the Alan Wake duology

McCaffrey’s collaboration with Remedy continued beyond Max Payne. After the second game, he returned to voice FBI agent Alex Casey and poet Thomas Zane in Alan Wake. In the sequel, Alex Casey resembles Sam Lake in appearance and continues to speak in McCaffrey’s voice, echoing the tone of the original Max Payne decades later.

Zachariah Trench from Control

McCaffrey contributed to Remedy projects including Control. He voiced Zachariah Trench, the director of the Federal Bureau of Control. The character is killed before the main character Jessie arrives, but the game preserves roughly twenty minutes of Trench’s monologues recorded before his death.

Edward Carnby from Alone in the Dark (2008)

Beyond Remedy titles, McCaffrey also voiced the lead in Alone in the Dark (2008), portraying Edward Carnby. Plans for a direct sequel faded due to low sales and publisher troubles. A new Alone in the Dark was released in 2024, but McCaffrey was no longer involved.
