Xiaomi HyperOS bootloader unlock rules vary by region and firmware

Xiaomi smartphones running the new HyperOS shell will have a limited ability to unlock the bootloader. This detail comes from Android Authority.

Xiaomi representatives state that bootloader unlocking is off by default for security reasons. To request access, users must submit an application to the Chinese Xiaomi forum.

Only applicants who have reached level five can submit the request. The permission is valid for one year and allows activation on up to three devices. These restrictions currently apply to the Chinese version of HyperOS and would also impact Russian buyers who ordered devices from China and flashed them with global firmware.

Reports indicate that devices with unlocked bootloaders may stop receiving HyperOS updates. If a user wants to restore update eligibility, the bootloader must be turned off.

At this time, it remains unclear what limitations would apply to users running the global firmware version.

A bootloader is a tool that enables modification and customization of the Android operating system. Once unlocked, users can gain root access, install custom firmware, and alter the device extensively, including removing preinstalled apps.
