Scientists Build a Video Camera That Mimics How Animals See

An international team from the United States and United Kingdom has crafted a video camera that imitates the visual worlds of birds, dogs, bees, and other creatures. Their findings appear in PLOS Biology, a peer‑reviewed scientific journal.

The researchers produced a portable, 3D‑printed device featuring a beam splitter that separates ultraviolet light from the visible spectrum. Each portion is captured by a dedicated sensor, enabling a composite view that mirrors specific animal perspectives.

In operation, the camera records video across four channels—blue, green, red, and ultraviolet. The captured data are then processed to render images as if viewed through the eye of chosen animals, guided by current scientific knowledge about eye structure and perception.

Software pipelines align the separate color channels and reconstitute scenes from the vantage points of different species. In testing, the approach achieved an average accuracy near 92 percent, with certain experiments reaching 99 percent in positive detections.
