Samsung has officially clarified that Android 14 will not reach the Galaxy S20 and Note 20 families, despite earlier listings suggesting otherwise. This update was reported by 9to5Google, which noted that the two 2020 flagships had briefly appeared on an official support registry before being removed again.
The publication explains that alongside the S20 and Note 20 lines, owners of the Galaxy Z Flip, Z Flip 5G, and Z Fold 2 were also left without Android 14. Samsung stated to reporters that those models were included in the list by mistake and that the registry has since been corrected.
At present, the expectation is that Android 14 will reach a newer set of devices, including the Galaxy S23, S22, and S21 series, as well as the Z Fold5, Z Flip5, Z Fold4, Z Flip4, Z Fold3, Z Flip3, A54, A53, A34, A33, M54, M53, M34, and M33. Some of these models may already be receiving the latest Android updates depending on market and carrier schedules. Others are anticipated to obtain the new firmware throughout 2024 and into 2025 as coverage expands across flagship and mid-range lines.
9to5Google adds that Samsung updated its flagship support policy in 2022, specifying that top-tier smartphones would receive the most recent Android versions for four years after their launch. The S20 and Note 20 lines, however, have not been included in this four-year window, aligning with Samsung’s current stance on continued OS updates for devices released in that era.
In related developments, Samsung has signaled a stronger emphasis on artificial intelligence within its newest Galaxy S lineup. This shift is viewed as part of broader efforts to enhance device performance, battery efficiency, and user experience rather than extending Android version support for older devices. Industry observers note that firmware updates remain a key channel for delivering security patches and feature refinements, even when an OS upgrade is not provided for legacy models. The company continues to publish periodic firmware updates to those devices that remain within the supported policy window, while customers in Canada and the United States should monitor official Samsung channels and carrier notices for the precise rollout timelines.
