The team behind the widely used PlayStation 3 emulator RPCS3 has announced progress on a new project: RPCSX, a PS4 emulator. This update was shared on the Read-Only Grade portal.

RPCS3 has earned a solid reputation over more than a decade, supporting more than 3,500 PS3 titles, with roughly 2,500 playable without major issues. The RPCS3 creators intend to apply their accumulated expertise to the development of RPCSX, aiming to bring PS4 compatibility to a broader audience.

The idea for a PS4 emulator first emerged in 2013 under the handle DH, but real work did not begin until the subsequent Sony console generation approached. In addition to DH, two other seasoned RPCS3 developers, kd-11 and Nekotekina, are contributing to RPCSX, lending their experience to the new project.

RPCSX is currently in early Linux development and does not yet run PS4 games. The team notes that PS4 emulation presents greater complexity than PS3 emulation, with the graphics processing unit offering more potential yet also more challenges. Shader handling remains a primary hurdle, though access to official documentation provides an essential resource for progress.

Looking ahead, RPCSX is expected to enable PC players to experience PS4-exclusive games such as Bloodborne, inFamous: Second Son, The Last of Us Part II, and additional titles, expanding the reach of Sony console experiences on personal computers.

The project continues to attract attention from the retro and preservation communities, who value software that preserves gaming history and broadens access to classic software ecosystems.
