Microsoft has resolved a long-standing problem that began more than two years ago, which prevented some Windows 10 machines from upgrading to Windows 11. This issue was first reported by the PCMag portal and affected devices powered by 11th-generation Intel Core processors when they ran certain Intel Smart Sound Technology drivers, specifically versions 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152. On attempting the upgrade, many systems encountered critical errors and blue screens, effectively blocking the Windows 11 installation on those PCs.

To prevent wider disruption, Microsoft implemented a targeted compatibility check during the upgrade process. This precaution was designed to avoid updates that could destabilize computers matching those hardware and driver criteria. The measure aimed to protect users from system instability while still allowing eligible devices to proceed with the upgrade when safe to do so.

The issue traces back to November 2021, and since that time some users had to manually download updated Intel drivers to move forward with the Windows 11 upgrade on affected machines. Microsoft’s guidance has evolved over the years, and the company now indicates that driver updates are available through Windows Update, streamlining the process for most users and reducing the need to hunt for drivers on separate download portals.

Update distribution can still take some time to reach every eligible device. Microsoft notes that the deployment window may extend up to 48 hours, so there may be a delay before the update appears in Windows Update for all affected systems. In practice, users should check periodically if they do not see the upgrade immediately, as rollout can be staggered by region, device model, and driver compatibility status.

In earlier notices, the experience around Windows 11 upgrades was sometimes described with language similar to Start menus or setup prompts appearing during the upgrade flow. This refreshes the memory of how the process evolved and why some PCs needed extra checks to protect system stability while still enabling a smooth transition to the newer operating system for eligible devices.
