Mastodon

Mastodon remains the most prominent alternative to traditional social networks, a microblogging platform where users post short notes of up to 500 characters within individual profiles. Today it hosts over 2.5 million active users. While its audience is far smaller than Twitter’s, Mastodon has shown rapid growth as Twitter faces ongoing issues. By early November, activity stood around 600,000 active users. The network thrives in part because media coverage frequently features Mastodon, and English serves as a common language across many communities. Mastodon has positioned itself as a viable alternative amid discussions about Twitter’s direction.

Mastodon was created by Evgeny Rostko, a Russian-born developer. The user experience mirrors Twitter in many ways, but registration differs: users select from thousands of servers grouped by language, interest, country, and other criteria. Signing up on a server grants access to both local communities and the wider network content.

There are relatively few Russian-speaking users on Mastodon. A reporter from socialbites.ca located only one Russian presenter on mastodon.ml, which has roughly 1.5 thousand users.

Interest in the service appears to be rising in Russia, as evidenced by English-language discussions on Twitter and by new feedback on the Google Play page for the Mastodon app.

Additional advantages include a translated interface for both site and app, and the absence of a VPN requirement to connect to the service.

Tumblr

Alternative #2 is Tumblr. Created in 2007, this platform emphasizes micro-texts and images. During the Runet of the 2000s and early 2010s, Tumblr gained popularity among youth subcultures, including what was known as “emo” or “hipsters.” It served a role akin to early Instagram, which was often unavailable in Russia. According to Statista, Tumblr’s website drew nearly 300 million monthly visits in 2022, and the service also offers iOS and Android apps with hundreds of millions of downloads.

Historically, Tumblr was known for looser moderation around adult content, a contrast to some platforms. Changes in 2018 restricted explicit material. Since then, Tumblr has continued to host a large number of bloggers who publish varied content. In recent weeks, amid Twitter’s challenges, Tumblr has explored broader content policies, including content labeled with appropriate disclaimers.

If Twitter experiences disruptions, users may turn to Tumblr for content sharing under applicable guidelines. For meme sharing, news discussions, and a broad range of community activity, Tumblr remains a relevant option.

reddit

Alternative #3, Reddit, closely mirrors Mastodon in functionality while aligning with Twitter in terms of media influence. Reddit began as a forum for news discussion but has evolved over the past several years to include social-network features such as profiles, subscriptions, upvotes, reposts, hashtags, and feeds. The platform has more than 52 million active users.

Users can select topics to shape their news feed on Reddit. Participation is flexible, with users contributing posts and comments. Each topic has moderators who can enforce rules and remove members who violate guidelines.

Reddit is known for high user engagement in ongoing discussions and for driving attention to media narratives. It has, at times, sparked widespread attention and even entertainment industry interest in corresponding events.

However, the platform can also host conspiracy theories discussed by some communities, including movements that promote controversial beliefs. Attention to such topics is balanced by the presence of diverse communities and vigilant moderation. Reddit is often described as the “home page of the internet” due to its broad scope and active user base.

Telegram

Telegram functions as a messaging app with many social features. While not a traditional blog platform by default, it enables channel-based publishing and broad media sharing, including text, photos, videos, and audio. The feed consists of channel subscriptions rather than a standard timeline.

A notable strength is the extensive Russian-speaking user base and community that has developed within Telegram. Public channels managed by politicians, media figures, and government agencies are common, providing venues for debate and information sharing. Those who follow political discussions on other platforms may find Telegram channels familiar and accessible.

On the downside, interaction remains limited within many Telegram channels. Typically, communication follows a one-way pattern from bloggers to subscribers, with discussion often constrained to channel comments or as-needed discussions. This format can affect the depth of engagement compared with more interactive social networks.
