Luna-25: Early Statements, Theories, and the Path to Final Findings

At this stage, it is premature to draw conclusions about what caused the Luna-25 mission to crash. The inquiry continues, and officials from Roscosmos have confirmed that findings will be released only after the full review is completed. This update comes via TASS, citing the space agency’s press service.

The government body indicated that the final assessment will be published once all analyses are finished, and emphasized that premature conclusions would be inappropriate.

Earlier, Ivan Moiseev, director of the Institute of Space Policy, suggested that a leading hypothesis circulating in social media is the malfunction of the Bius-L device as the likely cause of Luna-25’s failure. That theory, reported by socialbites.ca, has been referenced as the dominant storyline in discussions surrounding the event.

Historically, Luna-25 was launched as Russia’s first lunar mission in the modern era, debuting on August 11, 2023. Communication with the lander ceased on August 19 during a maneuver to establish an elliptical orbit prior to touchdown. The following day, Roscosmos stated that the spacecraft had effectively ceased to exist following a collision with the lunar surface.

Subsequent remarks from Roscosmos chief Yuri Borisov attributed the incident to the engine running beyond its allotted time by approximately 43 seconds while attempting to enter the pre-landing orbit, a misstep that led to a crash with the Moon.

On September 11, a source for RIA Novosti floated another possibility: a fault in the Bius-L device, which is designed to monitor orientation and acceleration, might have contributed to the disaster.

Roscosmos officials have stressed that abandoning the investigation after the initial setback would not be appropriate, and that it remains essential to determine all contributing factors before drawing final judgments.
