The iPhone 15 Pro Max is set to debut as Apple’s first smartphone to use a periscope telephoto module, enabling optical zoom for distant scenes in both photos and videos. This development is widely cited by industry observers including TF International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo via MacRumor’s reporting.
Industry insiders indicate that Largan will manufacture the essential photomodules for Apple. Reports claim the company will sell parts to a United States firm for about four dollars, a figure that falls below typical analyst projections. Kuo argues that Largan may not be able to leverage this reduced price immediately, though he suggests that a shift could occur in 2024 with the next generation iPhone, which, according to him, would rely on the same modules as the 15 Pro Max.
According to a TF International expert, the entry of a periscope lens appears restricted to the most expensive model in the 15 series, the iPhone 15 Pro Max. As the iPhone 16 approaches, the periscope capability is anticipated to extend to the standard Pro variant, broadening access to enhanced zoom performance across the lineup.
Additionally, it has been reported that Apple may alter its plans regarding the introduction of a mixed reality headset for WWDC 2023. While this aspect of the rumor cycle has attracted attention, the focus for many observers remains on how periscope optics could redefine mobile photography and videography in the coming years.
