Apple expected to boost iPhone 16 Pro cameras with a 48MP ultra-wide sensor and Wi-Fi 7
Industry analyst at Haitong International Securities, Jeff Pu, has suggested that Apple plans to introduce a 48-megapixel wide-angle lens with the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. This upgrade would mark a departure from the camera configurations seen in the company’s premium models to date, according to sources cited by MacRumors.
According to Pu, the 2024 lineup is poised to include Wi-Fi 7 connectivity and an upgraded 48 MP ultra-wide camera on the Pro-series. He noted that Apple typically unveils its next-generation iPhone lineup in the autumn, and he projected that the Pro models would feature three lenses with resolutions of 48 MP, 48 MP, and 12 MP, respectively.
Presently, the flagship iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max employ a triple-camera system, where the main camera is 48 MP and the two secondary sensors are 12 MP each. Pu emphasized that the refined wide-angle sensor would admit more light and render more detail, leading to improved image quality across scenes.
Beyond Pu’s commentary, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had indicated that the entire basic iPhone 16 lineup would adopt a multi-layer main camera sensor, underscoring Apple’s ongoing emphasis on sensor technology. These discussions are part of a broader pattern in which Apple continues to advance its core imaging capabilities while aiming to preserve the familiar three-camera layout on Pro models.
Earlier information had already pointed to a forthcoming sales window for the iPhone 15. The industry chatter around the iPhone 16 focuses on potential improvements to sensor design, processing pipelines, and wireless connectivity, all aimed at delivering sharper photos, quicker data transfer, and a more seamless user experience. While official specifications remain unconfirmed, the rumor ecosystem continues to spotlight camera performance as a key differentiator in this highly competitive segment, with observers watching to see how the new hardware and software features will translate into real-world results.
