Apple is reportedly negotiating with providers of flexible displays to develop a foldable MacBook, a development discussed by Business Korea. The company aims to finalize the production of its first foldable-screen MacBook as soon as 2025 and to bring it to market in 2026, according to the same source.

Industry insiders say Samsung Display has committed about $3.1 billion to manufacture 8.6 generation OLED panels during 2025 and 2026. LG Display is also investing in mid‑sized OLED matrices to support future laptop form factors. The aim is to push large foldable screens toward lower costs relative to smartphone flexible screens, a shift that could improve margins for manufacturers and enable broader adoption among users.

Neither LG nor Samsung currently offers a foldable‑screen laptop in their mainstream lines. Still, Samsung Electronics holds a registered trademark for such a device, signaling continued interest in this category.

In the current competitive landscape, Asus is widely regarded as the leader in foldable laptops. The Taiwanese maker introduced the ZenBook 17 Fold OLED, a 17-inch model, in September 2022, powered by a BOE display. This achievement helped establish a benchmark for large-format foldables in the consumer market.

There has also been industry chatter about Apple exploring distribution and sales strategies for a foldable MacBook, including potential retail checkpoints and customer financing approaches, as noted in market reporting. The tech segment’s momentum around foldable notebooks continues to attract attention from developers, suppliers, and observers who track display materials, hinge mechanisms, and thermal management as essential enablers of this evolution.

Looking ahead, analysts expect ongoing collaboration among display suppliers, panel manufacturers, and computer makers to refine the durability, weight, and battery life of foldable laptops. The objective is to deliver devices that combine the portability of traditional clamshell laptops with the flexibility of a large, high‑resolution panel, all while keeping production costs in check and ensuring reliable long‑term performance.
