The author of the YouTube channel Northwestrepair has published a new video in which he demonstrates a fake GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card. The portal reports this. No video card.
At first glance, the graphics card looks like Asus’ new RTX 4090, but a closer look showed that this is not Nvidia’s current flagship. Instead of the AD102 graphics chip that should be at the heart of the RTX 4090, this graphics card uses the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti’s GA102 GPU. The same chip is also used in the RTX 3090 and 3090 Ti. It is similar in size to the AD102 and is pin-compatible with it, making it possible to create such fakes.
The authors of the fake carefully polished the GPU crystal and engraved a new inscription on it to hide the change. Moreover, one of the memory chips had a capacity of only 256 MB instead of the required 2 GB and was not the GDDR6X standard.
It is also stated that the graphics processor is broken and cannot be repaired, so buyers of fake video cards receive a non-working device. It is still unknown how widespread this scheme is. However, experts recommend that users do not buy video cards from foreign markets that do not have a dispute and refund system.
