Google has proposed deleting billions of data collected from incognito mode users in its Chrome browser. In this respect reports Border.

In response to allegations of unauthorized monitoring of user activity in incognito mode in the Chrome browser, Google announced that a preliminary settlement was reached in a lawsuit filed in 2020. Therefore, Google has proposed deleting or anonymizing large amounts of data collected during an unknown period until December 2023. This decision is intended to meet the demands of the plaintiffs, who insist on compensation of at least $ 5 thousand for each of the millions of users who use this mode.

Google officials said the information collected was never used to link to specific users. The company also announced changes to the description of the incognito mode alert that clarify data collection mechanisms and visibility of user activity for sites. Additionally, Google has committed to allowing third-party cookies to be blocked in this mode for a period of five years.

Despite the plaintiffs’ demands for compensation reaching up to $5 billion, Google’s offer does not include compensation. However, users reserve the right to make individual requests to get a refund, which 50 people have already benefited from. Final approval of the settlement is the responsibility of the court.
