American telecommunications giant AT&T reported a massive leak of user data and therefore started resetting subscriber logins and passwords to prevent unauthorized access to their accounts. In this respect reports MacRumor’s publication.
The leak affected 7.6 million current AT&T customers and 65.4 million former customers. Login information and passwords of users’ personal accounts in the operator’s infrastructure, as well as other confidential data, were stolen.
Hackers claimed to have stolen the data of more than 70 million AT&T customers in 2021. The telco claims both then and now that the source of the leak was not in their own infrastructure but in one of its contractors. The leaked database includes names, addresses, dates of birth, AT&T account numbers, phone numbers, email addresses, Social Security numbers, logins and passwords.
The stolen data was made public in March 2024. AT&T initiated the password reset process for the security of users affected by the breach and said it was working with external cybersecurity experts to further analyze the situation. The company says the leak does not pose a direct threat to customers’ financial assets.
