On average, each Google Pixel smartphone is used for seven years before being abandoned. In this respect reports The GizmoChina publication quotes an interview with Google’s VP of Software, Shang Chau.

Chau made this statement while explaining why the company decided to support Pixel smartphones with software updates for seven years. According to Chau, the average lifespan of smartphones is seven years. It is noteworthy that this figure also includes the period of use by several owners, that is, Pixel smartphones are actively sold on the secondary market.

Google’s top executive also noted that the company’s switch to proprietary Tensor processors has allowed the company to provide such long-term support for its devices. The unified designs of tensor chips allow Google to optimize Android faster and better for the Pixel.

The move to year-round beta testing programs and quarterly QPR firmware releases also played an important role. Google now takes more detailed feedback before updates are released. This means the company can now bring features that were once reserved for major versions of Android in smaller, more frequent updates.

“Google’s seven-year update promise is a big win for users. This means your Pixel phone will stay safe and useful for years to come,” GizmoChina concluded.
