Criminals are making extensive use of Apple AirTag tracking devices to track and steal cars in Montreal (Canada). In this respect reports The MacRumors publication cited a warning issued by Canadian police to drivers.

Only recently, two people who saw Apple AirTag installed in their cars after returning from Montreal filed a complaint with the police. One of them, Ethan Young, said he was visiting relatives in Montreal. His iPhone alerted him that someone else’s AirTag was traveling with him. He then used his smartphone to activate the AirTag speaker, which led to him finding it on the car’s front grille.

Criminals are installing AirTags in cars to track them, steal them and transport them abroad. There’s also the possibility that AirTags could be used to tag cars in which drug dealers place drugs to transport out of Montreal.

Ryan McLiverty, a cyber analyst with the Vermont Intelligence Center, said the first such incidents were reported long ago, but a new spike in similar crimes was seen in March 2024.
