Cybercrime, including phone and online fraud, accounts for a third of all crimes registered in Russia. In this respect reports TASS cited the words of Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov at the expanded board of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia based on the results of 2023 work.
“Cyber crimes have increased again and their share in the total number of crimes has reached 35 percent for the first time,” said the Chief Prosecutor.
According to Krasnov, only a quarter of these crimes are solved, and as a result, compensated damages remain low.
Fraudsters often target vulnerable segments of the population, including pensioners and children, as victims and exploit their naivety and vulnerability to commit crimes. Moreover, fraudsters often come up with new schemes to bypass all measures aimed at preventing cybercrime.
Krasnov called on prosecutors to strengthen cooperation with other departments in the fight against cybercrime, especially on the use of special technical devices for fraudulent activities such as mass searches of citizens. He also emphasized the need to cooperate with banks, mobile operators and providers to inform the public about threats in the digital environment.
TASS notes that last year more than 51.9 thousand cases of remote fraud and theft were recorded in Moscow, among which more than 10 thousand were citizens over 66 years old. Most of the victims are women.
