Satellite communication function works on Android 15

Google has released Android 15 Developer Preview (DP) 2 for developers, which includes a feature responsible for satellite communications. In this respect reports iXBT portal.

The updated version of the operating system allows applications to detect satellite link usage through the “ServiceState.isUsingNonTerrestrialNetwork()” function. Additionally, as Google says, support for satellite communications will also be implemented when sending standard SMS or MMS messages and via the RCS protocol.

However, Android 15 Developer Preview 2 also includes significant improvements in device performance, interface fluency and security.

Android 15 testing is expected to happen in three phases with two releases for each, including the Developer Preview coming out in February and March. Now we have to wait for Beta in April and May and Platform Stability in June and July. The full and final version of Android 15 will be released first for Google Pixel smartphones in late summer or early fall 2024.
