The US Department of Justice has filed an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, accusing Apple of illegally monopolizing the smartphone market through the iPhone and the closed iOS ecosystem. In this respect reports ABC News broadcast.
The lawsuit, filed by the Justice Department in federal court in New Jersey, is “the latest in a series of attempts” by President Biden’s administration to crack down on alleged anticompetitive conduct by “some of the nation’s largest technology companies.” Sixteen state and district attorneys general joined the Department of Justice in filing this lawsuit.
“We allege that Apple has established a monopoly in the smartphone market by not only outperforming its competitors, but also in violation of federal antitrust law. “Leaving Apple’s actions unchecked will only continue to strengthen its dominant position,” said Attorney General Merrick Garland.
In the lawsuit, the department alleges that Apple has used the closed iOS ecosystem to “adopt broad, persistent, and illegal policies” aimed at maintaining its control of the smartphone market and preventing competitors from attracting consumers.
Speaking to reporters, Apple spoke harshly negatively about the case.
“As Apple, we innovate every day to make people love technology. “This lawsuit threatens who we are and the principles that distinguish Apple products in highly competitive markets.”
