The decision on the establishment of the Union State media company was signed after a meeting of the Supreme State Council (SSC) of Russia and Belarus at the end of January. Union State Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmitry Mezentsev said that the holding will be financed by the Union State, whose budget is formed by Belarus and Russia.
The funds previously allocated for financing the information resources of the Union State will be increased taking into account the inflation coefficient. Mezentsev noted that approximately 1 billion Russian rubles have already been allocated for various components of the holding. The holding team has not been formed yet, but the participation of experienced and talented experts is planned.
Mezentsev also emphasized that a regulatory framework for the activities of the Union State media company is currently being created. Working on this involves carrying out the necessary legally complex procedures. He also added that it is planned to appeal to the views and common potential of the media interested in discussing the construction of the Union and its historical aspects.
The Secretary of State also talked about a resource center that will be incorporated into the holding company and will be responsible for content distributed through electronic media. The holding’s main office will be in Moscow and its representative office will be in Minsk. The holding is planned to become fully operational by the beginning of 2025, with an emphasis on digitalization.
Alexander Malkevich, the first deputy chairman of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation for the development of the information community, media and mass communications, explained that the creation of a convergent editorial team plays a very important role.
“This holding could act as the news-producing media office of the Union State, which would then be distributed to traditional major media outlets in both Russia and Belarus,” Malkevich said.
