Buying games on Steam has become more expensive for Russians

MTS has increased the conversion commission when replenishing a wallet on Steam, and it is now 10%. In this respect reports DTF portal with links to user messages.

Previously the conversion fee was no more than 8%, but now it reaches 10%. This means, for example, that you top up your Steam wallet with 350 rubles. 317 rubles will be credited to the user’s account. In this case, the MTS service requires an additional commission of 50 rubles. MTS representatives confirmed the change in the commission.

Netizens associate this step with the discontinuation of QIWI, one of the main ways to replenish Steam wallets among Russian gamers. There is no official confirmation of this hypothesis.

In February 2024, the Central Bank of the Russian Federation canceled the license of QIWI Bank, as a result of which users of the service lost the opportunity to top up their gaming wallets on Steam to purchase more games. This was one of the easiest and cheapest ways to pay for digital purchases on Steam after the store stopped supporting Russian bank cards and payment services in 2022.
