Millions of new users signed up for Telegram messenger during the global Internet outage. Russian businessman Pavel Durov tells this reported on the official English Telegram channel.

There was a major internet outage on the evening of March 5, 2024. Users from all over the world complained about problems with access to social networks – Facebook stopped working at the same time (the owner of the Meta company is known as an extremist in Russia and is banned), Instagram (the owner of the Meta company is known as an extremist is banned in Russia), YouTube, some Google services and other popular online services -applications. The problem is thought to be caused by underwater internet cables running at the bottom of the Red Sea, which were damaged by the Houthis in one of the attacks.

“While Instagram and Facebook were closed, millions of people signed up and shared content on Telegram in the last hour. It is noteworthy that Telegram is more reliable than these services, although technical support for each user is several times cheaper for us,” Durov wrote.

The businessman also pointed out that Telegram employs approximately 1,000 times fewer full-time employees than listed American IT companies.

“During 2023, Telegram was unavailable for only 9 minutes out of 525,600. Uptime is 99.9983%,” the businessman emphasized.
