In New Zealand, many fuel companies’ self-service petrol station networks have closed due to a software bug caused by leap year. This was reported by newspaper Bloomberg.

Fuel suppliers Z Energy, Allied Petroleum and Gull said automatic filling stations were closed, so people could only refuel at live-staffed stations as payment could be made there.

Company representatives stated that the error in their systems was caused by the start of February 29. Organizations are trying to solve the problem with technology contractors.

New Zealand was one of the first countries in the world to adopt the second lunar extra day, which occurs every four years.

The main reason for the date of February 29 is that the Earth revolves around the Sun in 365.25 days. Thus, over the four-year cycle, full days are accumulated in the calendar, which are added to the month of February.

The name “leap year” comes from the Latin expression bis sextus, meaning “second sixth”, that is, the second sixth day of February – the 29th day of the month.
