Apple plans to equip the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus models with OLED displays with high refresh rates and Always On Display (AOD) support. In this respect reports South Korean publication The Elec.

It looks like the base iPhone 17 models will be the first to get support for ProMotion technology, which is currently only available on Pro models. ProMotion is a technology that allows you to dynamically change the screen refresh rate from 1 Hz to 120 Hz depending on the content. This provides a smoother image and also saves battery power when high frequencies are not required. These types of displays also support the Always On Display feature, which shows information on the lock screen.

ProMotion is calling for more advanced low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO) OLED panels, which are currently used in iPhone 15 Pro models. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models use less advanced OLED matrices made of low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS).

According to The Elec, Apple will not change the panel type on the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, which will be released this year. However, Apple plans to switch to LPTO panels in all iPhone models next year. To do this, the company relies on supplies from Chinese manufacturer BOE, which currently supplies LTPS panels to Apple. However, BOE has not yet proven its ability to produce LPTO panels in the required volume and quality. If BOE cannot overcome this challenge, Apple may turn to other suppliers such as Samsung and LG Display, which already supply Apple with LPTO panels for the iPhone 15 Pro models.
