The second most popular day among scammers is Monday; 19.2% of all messages are sent on this day. Wednesday comes next with a 19% share. After Wednesday, a decline begins that ends on Sunday – on this day scammers send the least number of messages, only 7%.
Phishing messages are the main way to send malicious files to victims’ computers, and they are found in 98% of letters, Kargalev said. The most common file type for attachments is .rar, with 22.3% of all other extensions. .zip comes in second place (21.1%). The top three are closed by files with extensions that do not rank first, with a share of 17.3%. The following are .z (7.7%), .gz (5.7%), .docx (5.4%), .doc (4.5%), .xls (4.4%), .7z (% 4.2), .img (3.5%). and .r00 (2.8%).
The file size in a phishing email attachment typically varies between 32 KB and 2 MB. The most common 512 KB range is 1 MB and accounts for more than 36%.
“Last year’s trend in phishing emails was high-quality, well-thought-out bait letters, something that a few years ago could only be afforded by certain professional participants or sophisticated groups in the world of cybercrime. For example, pro-state attacks as part of targeted attacks,” Kargalev said.
Most often, malicious attachments contain programs intended to steal logins and passwords, among other data, from infected devices, hackers said.
