London Underground is set to launch a video surveillance system based on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Algorithms should automatically detect various violations of law, order and security. Technology department got acquainted with design documentation oppression Wired.
According to materials obtained by journalists, artificial intelligence will detect aggressive passengers, armed persons, people falling on the rails, as well as those trying to enter the station without paying a fee.
The project is being implemented by the British capital’s public transport operator (Transport for London), which manages the city’s metro and bus network. The company has already tested 11 tracking algorithms at Willesden Green station in north-west London. During testing, the AI detected more than 44 thousand violations, 19 thousand of which were reported to station personnel.
The documents stated that the artificial intelligence made mistakes during the tests. For example, the neural network identified children as potential freeloaders when they passed through the turnstiles with their parents. Additionally, the algorithm could not distinguish a folding bike from a regular bike.
Privacy experts have expressed concerns about such a system. According to experts, the algorithms are not accurate enough, which increases the risk of reputable travelers being identified as violators.
