The Atomic Energy Agency of Japan will test a new type of nuclear power plant reactor that can automatically shut down operations in the event of a power outage. The newspaper reported this Yomiuri.

According to the publication, the high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, which will be tested at the end of March, will reach 100% load during the test. The temperature inside will reach 1000 degrees Celsius.

The helium used to cool the reactor is expected to naturally dissipate heat after a power outage, causing the facility’s temperature to drop safely. According to Yomiuri, the experiment will be conducted under controlled conditions and researchers will be able to stop the experiment in case of an emergency.

At the end of January, the Financial Times newspaper cited a forecast from the International Energy Agency (IEA). WroteGlobal nuclear energy production is projected to increase by around 3% per year over the next few years, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. The agency predicts that nuclear energy production will reach a historical high of 2,915 TWh in 2024, exceeding the previous record of 2,809 TWh set in 2020.
