Experts from the School of Materials Science and Engineering at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou have reported a breakthrough in the development of thermal insulation materials needed to protect aircraft when traveling at hypersonic speeds. The study was published in the scientific journal magazine Advanced Materials (AdMa).
According to scientists, they managed to obtain a porous ceramic coating with exceptional resistance to mechanical loads and high temperatures.
Lightly porous materials provide low heat transfer, but often have to pay for their low weight with increased brittleness.
Chinese engineers solved this problem with a method called high-entropy design. They managed to obtain a compound called porous high-entropy diboride, or 9PHEB, with 9 cations.
The finished material provides “exceptional thermal stability” and “ultra-high compressive strength” that can withstand temperatures up to 2,000°C, the researchers said. Scientists believe 9PHEB will enable advances in aerospace research.
