Apple will be the first company to receive chips manufactured using TSMC’s future 2nm process technology. In this respect reports The MacRumors publication cites a new report from Taiwanese analysts of DigiTimes. TSMC is expected to start producing 2nm chips in the second half of 2025.
Reducing the size of the process means reducing the number of transistors cast from silicon. The smaller the transistor, the more space it can accommodate on the chip. This trend leads to chips made using a smaller process technology having more power but also consuming less power.
In 2023, Apple released 3nm chips for its iPhone and Mac. The transition from 5nm technology to 3nm technology resulted in a 20% increase in GPU speed and a 10% increase in CPU speed.
TSMC is building two new factories to produce 2nm chips and is working to get approval for a third. TSMC often builds new factories when it needs to increase production capacity to meet large orders.
Immediately after the start of 2nm chip production, TSMC begins preparations to start chip production with 1.4nm topology. Rumor has it that the company has already started developing the latter. These are expected to be released before 2027.
