NASA experts managed to restore communication with the Ingeniuty helicopter on Mars a day after the signal was lost. This has been officially reported bill NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory on social network X (formerly Twitter).
Space agency officials solved the problem by flying the Perseverance rover to the drone’s final landing site and holding long listening sessions to pick up transmissions from Ingeniuty.
“The team is examining new data to better understand the unexpected communications failure on Ingeniuty’s 72nd flight,” NASA said.
The incident occurred during a planned helicopter flight. The device rose to a maximum height of 12 meters and transmitted information about its condition through the Perservance rover, but during descent the signal from the aircraft was lost before it touched the surface of the planet. The craft landed out of visual range of its “partner” on the ground.
Ingeniuty and Perservance have been on Mars since 2020. It was initially assumed that the helicopter would make no more than five flights, but its service life turned out to be much longer than the designers expected. Today, the drone performs aerial reconnaissance, helping the rover find the most suitable routes for travel.
