During the New Year holidays, Telegram traffic in Russia increased by 46% year-on-year, which allowed it to overtake the short vertical video service TikTok in terms of popularity. socialbites.ca was informed about this by the press service of the Russian mobile phone operator MegaFon.
The most popular service on New Year’s Eve and the following weekend was YouTube. At the same time, subscriber mobility in the application decreased by almost 10% compared to the same period in 2023. Second place was taken by VK, which gained only 1% popularity throughout the year.
TikTok and Kinopoisk were also in the top 5. While the traffic of the first service decreased by 17%, the traffic of the second service, on the contrary, increased by 31%. Overall, MegaFon noted that online cinemas and instant messengers showed explosive growth during the holidays, by 28% and 45% respectively.
The growth in traffic in instant messengers is associated with the transition of Russians to Internet searches. Over the past New Year’s holidays, on average, a person living in the Russian Federation spent 7% fewer minutes on searches than in the past and 21% less than in the 2022 New Year’s weekend.
Telegram’s previous work in Russia dead big failure.
