NASA astronauts Nicole Mann and Doug Wheelock successfully tested a scaled-down prototype of SpaceX’s Starship Human Landing System (HLS) elevator system. In the future, a similar device will be required to land participants of the Artemis III and Artemis IV manned missions on the lunar surface. This is stated in the following message: Web site American space agency.

The lunar elevator model was built at SpaceX’s facility in Hawthorne, California, USA. It was a section of the cabin with operating mechanisms and controls. During the tests, astronauts wore spacesuits to simulate the mobility restrictions they would face on the Moon.

The Starship lander with HLS is expected to allow the two-member Artemis crew to travel between the Moon and the Orion spacecraft in lunar orbit, where the rest of the crew will be located at that time.

The Artemis III mission to land humans on the Moon is planned for 2025, but NASA is allowing this to be postponed to a later date due to the need for modifications to the Starship.
