Experts from the Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have developed an online platform for selecting scientific examiners and competitors for theses. The new service is partly reminiscent of dating sites or dating applications such as Tinder, PNIPU’s press service told socialbites.ca.

As Perm Polytechnic explains, scientists need to look for colleagues for joint projects from time to time. However, this can be difficult due to the closed nature of the scientific community and the lack of specific tools to solve such problems.

PNRPU has created a system based on artificial intelligence (AI) that analyzes the digital footprint based on publications of Russian scientists. It can find people suitable for your scientific fields of activity and help you contact them quickly.

The neural network analyzes articles, books and conference materials from various authors. The system database currently includes more than 500 universities and scientific organizations of the Russian Federation (for example, departments of the Russian Academy of Sciences).

“The system calculates and determines the degree of similarity by comparing the digital footprints of two scientists, obtaining a value from 0 to 1. If the value is close to 0, the activities of scientists do not overlap in any way, and if it is close to 1, they conduct similar research,” explained Evgeniy Kononov, a graduate student of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics of PNIPU to socialbites.ca.

The user can search for scientists by their full name or by their identifier in Scopus (a unified database of scientific literature). Additionally, the service allows you to search by text description (for example, part of an article title). The platform also finds the selected scientist’s closest colleagues.

Russian “scientific Tinder” will be available in two versions: as a public website and as a closed version with extended functionality. Perm Polytechnic noted that such a service has no complete analogue either in Russia or abroad.
